The Quantum Era of Cybersecurity

Classical encryption techniques show several weaknesses nowadays, including randomness generators and asymmetric encryption protocols which are used everywhere throughout the Internet. With the application of quantum mechanics principles to cryptography, a new dimension to secure communication has been developed. Quantum random number generators will be the building block of the next generation of encryption.

Quantum safe encryption comes in two flavours: Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and post-quantum encryption. During this session, Jose will summarise how QKD works and whether it needs post quantum algorithms or can function on its own.

Will post-quantum encryption be deployed massively while keeping QKD for very specific cases? Do they complement each other? When are they needed? Is the quantum computer a threat today?

Jose Coello, PhD in Quantum Computing, will explore these issues based on his experience working with quantum random number generators and helping in the implementation of experimental post-quantum encryption protocols such as NTRU. Jose comes from Tenerife where he studied a Physics degree followed by a Master and PhD in Quantum Computing at University College London (UCL). He is currently Chief Scientific Officer at Crypta Labs, a quantum cybersecurity company that develops IP, hardware and related software using the quantum properties of light.

The event will take place the 24th of April at our offices in La Laguna (Plaza de la Concepción, 20) and will be followed, as always, by some drinks and pizzas.
