This concert is a tribute to one of the greatest maestros of Persian classical music (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persian_classical_music) and the soloists of tar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tar_(lute)), Jalil Shahnaz. He started to play Tar in 1949 in Isfahan, Iran.
Tar plays an important role in classical Persian music. It is a long-necked, waisted instrument, shared by many cultures and countries like Iran (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran), Afghanistan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afghanistan), Armenia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armenia), Georgia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgia_(country)), Republic of Azerbaijan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_Azerbaijan), and other areas near the Caucasus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caucasus) region. The word tār means "string" in Persian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persian_language), though it might have the same meaning in languages influenced by Persian.
