The Other Side of Hope
After the Festival and Fringe, join me for some quirky, ironic and deadpan humour from Finnish director Aki Kaurismaki. Palace has listed this session for a preview weekend so the cinema and session time is scheduled. Meet at 2:45 pm for the 3 pm session. From Palace Nova: Winner of the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 2017 Berlinale, where it topped the prestigious Screen International critics’ poll as best film of the festival, the hilarious and poignant new comedy from beloved director Aki Kaurismäki (Le Havre, Drifting Clouds, The Man Without A Past) is a richly enjoyable and compassionate crowdpleaser about the friendship between a newcomer to Helsinki and a budding – if completely inexperienced – restaurateur. After arriving in Finland from Syria as a stowaway on a freighter, Khaled (superb newcomer Sherwan Haji) applies for asylum. Things don’t look encouraging, and not all locals present a welcoming face. But after crossing paths with stoic travelling shirt salesman-turned-entrepreneur Wikström (Sakari Kuosmanen), he finds an unlikely source of kindness and connection. When Khaled eventually receives news of his missing sister, Wikström hatches a scheme to help reunite the pair, but it seems getting out of Finland is much, much trickier than getting in… Kaurismäki’s thoughtful and unmistakably droll films often depict difficult situations and people working in solidarity to overcome them, but with THE OTHER SIDE OF HOPE he reaches new levels of resonance. Indeed, this intelligent, funny and affecting film has been hailed one of his best. Reviews: Rotten Tomatoes (critics) 90% (audience score) 80% After the film we can go to a Rundle St cafe for coffee/drinks/food/discussion of the film. What we're about

Public Group

We are a diverse group of people who enjoy seeing good films and discussing the films. We see a range of genres; good mainstream films as well as arthouse, indie, foreign (subtitled) and scifi films. So it doesn't matter what kind of movie you enjoy, there should be something for you.

We aim to schedule at least two films each month, usually on weekend afternoons although this may vary depending on film release dates, film festivals and organiser availability. After the film we will get together for coffee, perhaps a meal and to discuss the film we've seen. Movies will also be scheduled at other times, either for special events or just to take advantage of the cheaper tickets available on certain days. Most movies will be at the Palace Nova cinemas, but sometimes we may schedule films at other locations such as Marion, Glenelg or Piccadilly where it may be more convenient for some members.

New members should attend at least one Meetup Adelaide Film Club event within 6 months. Otherwise their membership may be removed although they will be free to rejoin at a later date.

Members are welcome to put up suggestions for movies or movie-related events and are also welcome to contribute to discussions on the website. Whether we can act on these suggestions will depend on organiser availability.

Cost: a donation of $1 from those attending events would be appreciated to help maintain the website.
