What we're about
Upcoming events (3)
Sunset on the 4th is 6:55 and we plan to ride 15 minutes into twilight. That said We’ll be starting near Southpoint and final starting point will be sent out Monday evening. Make sure that your bike is in good working order - tires hold air and are up to pressure, brakes and shifters work and your chain has been oiled. We'll be riding for just over 1 hours and about 13 miles. The ride is fairly flat and shaded and our pace will be moderate (about 12.5 mph average). I recommend a hard tail or hybrid bike, but if you really want to bring a road bike it's ok, though you'll likely be a bit bored. Unicycles....? I'll be eating after the ride at a Covid prepped restaurant. You're welcome to join me if you like. Helmets are required and by signing up you agree to THOG liability waiver statement. Please Note!! Any cancellation less than 30 hours before the beginning of the event will be considered a "no show"
Join THOG for Fall Foliage XVIII at Great Smoky Mountains National Park! Experience the beauty of the NC/TN mountains, waterfalls, trails and, of course, Fall Colors!
PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE EVENT DESCRIPTION BEFORE YOU RSVP!
Cades Cove has lots to offer including Balds, the Cades Cove Loop, Abrams Falls, and some of the 1,500 bears that call this National Park home! A decision on which hikes and activities we’ll do will be determined after we arrive at the park.
Our hikes will range from moderate to strenuous. If we hike Gregory Bald, it will be a nearly 12 mile strenuous trail hike with an elevation gain of 3,020ft.
Since we’ll have at least two THOG Organizers for this event, we may be able to divide into different groups on Saturday with unique itineraries.
This three day trip will be a car camping event. There are flush toilets and drinking water but no showers at the campground. Amenities include a Camp Store, Visitor Center, and Horseback Riding facility.
All participants need to bring their own camping equipment, food and other supplies. Be sure to bring clothing layers like a hat, gloves, and winter jacket because it tends to get a little chilly during this time of year. The cost of the campsite and firewood will be shared among all participants and the per person cost will depend on how many attend (around $7-$15 pp). The shared costs of carpooling are not included in this amount.
CARPOOLS: Everyone will be expected to carpool! There is very limited parking at our campsite - around 5 spots - so it would be great to have carpools of at least 3-4 people per car/SUV/van. The remaining cars will have to park at the overflow lot near the campground store.
Our trip begins bright and early on Friday by meeting in the Triangle, setting up carpools then driving to Mingo Falls close to the Smoky Mountains to break up our trip. This 120ft waterfall and .4 mile moderate hike won’t disappoint. Afterwards, we’ll continue on to Cades Cove for the final 1.5-2 hour drive to the campsite. Patience 😀 will be the key during this trip due to the sheer number of visitors and cars that will be in the mountains to see the fall colors.
RSVP’S WILL OPEN IN TWO PHASES: 15 Spots on 8/30, Remaining 8-10 Spots on 9/12.
**Masks are required inside all buildings at the park!**
DETAILED trip information, including our initial meeting spot in the Triangle and itineraries will be emailed to all participants via Meetup soon after RSVP’s close. If you’ve had a history of no-shows or last minute cancellations with THOG, your RSVP may be removed by us. If you are no longer able to attend this event, please change your RSVP before sign-ups close to give others a chance to participate, especially if there’s a waiting list.

Hike from the visitor center at the base to the top along the Grindstone and Ledge Sping trails for a (hopefully) colorful view of the piedmont hills and Blue Ridge Mountains. After hiking back down, hikers have the option of driving to Mt. Airy for food, music and art at the Autumn Leaves Festival. Total hiking distance at Pilot Mountain is 7-8 miles.
