(Local) DAYHIKE - UMSTEAD RUINS & HISTORY – PART 3

Details
Here is an opportunity to experience parts of Umstead State park that you may have never seen if you have always stayed on the marked hiking trails. On this series of hikes we will explore some of the wilder and more remote sections of the park keeping our eyes peeled for natural wonders and signs of previous habitation. Now we have the assistance of the recently published “Stories in Stone” by Tom Weber that puts names and faces to some of the things that we might find.
On this hike we will be exploring the central section of the park which contains a significant number of old home sites. We’ll learn about an unsolved murder and visit the remains of the camp that was named HMS Crabtree by the British sailors that stayed there during WWII.
We will be hiking on maintained and unmaintained trails, old roads, bridle trails, and cross-country. There are NO convenient short-cut or bail-out points on this hike. Because of this I am rating this outing STRENUOUS and suitable for FIT HIKERS ONLY! Sorry, No kids or pets.
