A Gentle Intro to Processing - Coding for Artists

Details

Processing is a very popular language designed to make it easier for artists and designers to realise their ideas in code.

Here's an example of what can be done with processing:

Here's what their own website https://processing.org says:

Processing is a flexible software sketchbook and a language for learning how to code within the context of the visual arts. Since 2001, Processing has promoted software literacy within the visual arts and visual literacy within technology. There are tens of thousands of students, artists, designers, researchers, and hobbyists who use Processing for learning and prototyping.

Processing has even won a few awards for contributing to the world of art and design.

This meetup will be a hands-on tutorial introducing Processing and intended for complete beginners - you don't even have to have coded before! Here's what we'll do:

• We'll make sure everyone has their laptop ready - all you need:

• a good modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari),

• a text editor (e.g. SublimeText (http://www.sublimetext.com), notepad++ (https://notepad-plus-plus.org), or your favourite),

working wifi to download the processing libraries and example project.

• We'll discuss Processing concepts (like the canvas, colours, shapes, motion, the pointer) .. and illustrate each one with simple code. It is these basic building blocks that will enable us to create more sophisticated art with processing if we wanted to.

• We'll be working with processing to create art that works in everyone's web browser (using p5.js (https://p5js.org)), making your work easily accessible to potentially millions of viewers who need nothing more than a browser to experience it.

• At the end we'll take a quick look at some of the beautiful images that others have created with processing - to see what is possible with processing - it's always fun to do that!

Take your first steps coding for visual art - and join us for a fun and intimate tutorial - you really don't need any previous coding experience at all, just interest and enthusiasm!

Please arrive before the start at 7pm.
