What's New In Linux? The Great Carla Schroder + Book Giveaway

Details

Our final meetup of 2021 will feature a topic that got us into open source in the first place - Linux.

And we're absolutely thrilled with the speaker, the topic, and the fact we'll be giving away a number of "Linux Cookbook, second edition" books and other prizes to lucky attendees (something we love to do).

*Please note, this meetup will be virtual / online, so no travel or COVID considerations will be required.

Also, the meetup is 100% free, but a quick registration is required - https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_pVMjsRxPR1SuOcWV4zH0kw

Finally, please note live programming will begin at 12 noon ET. You can join as early as 11:55 am ET. Our goal is to wrap up no later than 1:15 pm ET as we know many need to get back to work.

Carla Schroder, author of the "Linux Cookbook", "Linux Networking Cookbook", and "Linux Cookbook 2nd Edition" (released in Sept. 2021) for O'Reilly Media, and "The Book of Audacity" for No Starch Press. Author of hundreds of Linux howtos for various online publications.
Currently toiling for the wonderful SUSE documentation team.

Bio:
Carla Schroder is a self-taught Linux and Windows sysadmin who laid hands on her first computer around her 37th birthday. Her first PC was a Macintosh LC II. Next came an IBM clone--a 386SX running MS-DOS 5 and Windows 3.1 with a 14-inch color display--which was adequate for many pleasant hours of Doom play. Then around 1997 she discovered Red Hat 5.0 and had a whole new world to explore.

Somewhere along the way she found herself doing freelance consulting for small businesses and home users, supporting both Linux and Windows users and integrating Linux and Windows on the LAN, primarily Linux servers and Windows clients. Then, thanks to the Internet, she built a cozy home office and made a career writing Linux howtos. Carla is proof that you're never too old to try something new; computers
are a heck of a lot of fun; and anyone can learn to do anything. Visit carlaschroder.com for more Carla stuff.

Title
What's new in Linux: the most significant changes in the past ten years

Talk Abstract:
Linux's undeserved reputation for being difficult to use lingers, as though we still have to compile kernels, go on long hunts for supported hardware, build apps from source, and memorize long strange command-line incantations to get anything done. In reality, Linux has evolved into an extremely flexible powerhouse, running on everything from tiny embedded devices to mainframes. Most of its major subsystems have been modernized, such as wireless networking, audio, video, block device management, filesystems, init and process management, hotplug, printing, firewalls, hardware probing and discovery, boot menu, and more. Join me for a fun overview of some of the cool changes in the past ten years that make Linux the most
user-friendly and most powerful computer operating system.

Giveaways and other cool stuff:

We'll be giving away a number of physical copies of Carla's new book "Linux Cookbook, second edition" - https://www.oreilly.com/library/view/linux-cookbook-2nd/9781492087151/

As always, we'll give away a number of ATO t-shirts and stickers also (we cover shipping on these also).

We may try to make a couple of mechanical keyboards available as well, since these seem to be extremely popular with our community.
