History of Eastern Docklands

Until the 17th century the Eastern Docklands are a wetland, inspiring painters like Rembrandt van Rijn on his walks outside of the city gates.

In the golden Age of Holland, times changed quickly. Amsterdam becomes a important trade city and needs to expand rapidly to house the stream of immigrants and find space to build factories.

Industry

The Island of Oosterburg is created to harbour and build ships for the Dutch East Indies Company (VOC), a shipping company so big and powerful it could speak as a representative of the government of The Netherlands in the 17th century.

In the 19th century, the introduction of the steam engine changed the face of Oostenburg. Steamboats brought passengers to the new lands of America and the foundation of the Dutch steam machine industry is laid.

From the 19th century, companies like ASM, NDSM and Werkspoor built a spectacular range of steam engines, locomotives, trains and trams. Thousands of people worked in the island factories.

Modern times
From the 20th century, the old factories, docklands and warehouses and factory halls have steadily made way for residential areas, often incorporating the industrial look and feel.

More recently, creative enterprises, restaurants and clubs have taken the opportunity to use parts of the old halls for work and events.
