What we're about

The Angels of Freedom community group launched in December 2017 with the aims of providing compassionate support & increasing awareness of risks and vulnerabilities within the Leeds LGBT+ communities.

We provide positive opportunities to work within the community, and provide a constructive forum for engagement with organisations such as West Yorkshire Police, British Transport Police and Leeds City Council in addition to partnership working with agencies such as Samaritans Leeds, Forward Leeds and others providing support.

In this group we'll share opportunities to engage with activities led by our project along with those of our partners.

Leeds Freedom Families

Online event

Support | Network | Champion

The Leeds Freedom Families is an initiative of the Angels of Freedom, providing a non-judgemental conversational space for parents/guardians (close family/friends) with LGBT+ children.

Our monthly drop in space provides the opportunity to network and share your experiences of supporting your LGBT+ children, gaining peer support from others and identifying information/advice to help you be the champion your child needs you to be.

The group is supported by LGBT+ volunteers from within the Angels of Freedom project, so in order to provide assurance for the space we respectfully confirm this event is open only for those who are supporting their LGBT+ family members.

Get in touch with us for a chat if you're interested in joining us for a chat on the evening, as we get the group relaunched in 2021 it's a great time to meet new people with shared experience - [masked]

These sessions are held on Zoom.

Online event

These sessions are hosted by the West Yorkshire Police Hate Crime response coordinators, and facilitated by an independent chair (Rob Wilson, Angels of Freedom coordinator).

We welcome new members to assist in reviewing and discussing recent cases of reported LGBT+ Hate Crime in Leeds, to ensure the police have provided an appropriate response in supporting the reporting person and in tackling the Hate Crime incident.

We provide positive feedback on cases handled well, and constructive comments where we feel further/different actions should have been taken by the police.

No previous knowledge or experience needed, however pre-registration is required. For a role overview and application please email [masked] &/or [masked]

Due to the ongoing situation with Covid-19 these sessions are hosted online by West Yorkshire Police using secured virtual meeting space. Links are provided in advance of each session.
