Ice Cream and Intro to Angular

Details

We're kicking off the Angular Seattle meetup with a summer-themed ice cream social. Come for the ice cream, stay for the talks! We'll be focusing on topics that are helpful to people who are new to Angular - experience with AngularJS helpful, but not required!

Lightning talks

IoT PWA FTW (Tara Manicsic)

Description: "On my camper tour of the West Coast (#KendoCamperTour) I’ve decided to work on and talk about my project using Philips Hue API, Progressive Web App strategies, Angular and Kendo UI components. I created this progressive web app to control my Philips Hue Go lights around my camper. We’ll take a quick tour of my journey not just the Developer Advocacy tour up the coast but also the set up of my UI using the Angular CLI & connecting to the my IoT devices. We’ll also squeeze in a little intro to PWAs at the end! For the Win!"

Initial Hurdles (Phil Berman)

Description: There are a few topics which seem so basic to knowledgeable developers that they get glossed over in documentation and tutorials. We'll address these specifically, so as to help beginners get over potential stumbling blocks.

Router (Mikael “Mike” Mörlund)

Description: What does the Angular Router do and why do we need it? In this talk we’ll show you how to set up and configure the router. We’ll walk you through how you can use it to manage application state and navigate between components.

Presentation

Making an Angular App from scratch (Mike Giambalvo)

Description: Want to see what it’s like to create an Angular app from scratch? We’ll be (mostly) live coding IceCreamFight, an web app where you can vote for your favorite flavor of ice cream. You’ll learn how to use Firebase, Angular Material, and ngx-datatable (https://github.com/swimlane/ngx-datatable) to create professional-looking, useful applications in less time than it takes a sundae to melt!

Speaker Bios

Tara (@tzmanics) is a Developer Advocate for Progress as well as a life-long student, teacher and maker. She has spent her career using Javascript on both back-end and front-end to create applications. In her free time she works in her community to educate and learn from other developers. Tara launched the Cincinnati Chapter of Women Who Code and Co-Chairs the Cincinnati branch of NodeSchool. Beyond code, she likes to make things with other materials (wool, solder, clay, etc.) and hike any mountain she can get to with her trusty sidekick, #toshmagosh.

Phil Berman is a software tester at Perfection Learning. As a one-time developer and a long-time tester, he is looking to catch up on modern web development tools and techniques. When not doing this, he reads comics, watches anime, and plays various card and video games.

Mikael “Mike” Mörlund

A long time ago on a computer far, far away.... It all started on a Commodore 64. Swedish Mike has been working as a developer at BlackRock since 2003. He enjoys traveling with his wife, putting together Ikea furniture and spending time with his labradoodle. He is also the creator of the Angular BeastCode Snippets for Visual Studio Code.
