What we're about

All are welcome to join! The Secret Lab hosts activities that include sewing, letterpress printing, Raspberry Pi, Arduino, silk-screen printing, knitting, and more! Check AADL.org for all programs.

WEEKLY WEDNESDAY LETTERPRESS LAB (6-8:30pm at the Downtown Library)

This weekly lab will introduce you to the process and the materials for printing by hand on a cylinder proof press and small platen press. AADL staff will show you the basics and we’ll explore more advanced printing techniques with special guests. No prior experience necessary. Supplies are provided. You can return every Wednesday to work on multi-week projects. This program involves direct handling of lead-based type and is therefore not suitable for small children.

Letterpress Open Lab

Ann Arbor District Library: Downtown

AADL's beloved Letterpress Labs are back! Letterpress is the traditional process of printing by hand using moveable type. This lab will feature a short guided activity to get familiar with assembling & printing a letterpress project. Participants will be able to use wood type, handset lead type and ornaments, and learn how to hand ink and print on a Vandercook cylinder press. If you like, stay longer to work on a more involved project.

Due to the presence of lead-based type, this program is intended for adults.

Sewing Lab: Sergers with Rae Hoekstra

Ann Arbor District Library: Downtown

Sewing instructor Rae Hoekstra of Made by Rae will do a demo on using a serger in sewing.

Join us for an evening of sewing. We will have our lab’s machines set up and staff will be on hand to show you the basics. You can bring a project you’ve been working on, or just stop by to practice your stitches. We welcome all skill levels. No prior knowledge is necessary.

Block Printing Workshop

Ann Arbor District Library: Downtown

Using soft blocks, you will carve and print your own design onto blank note cards or paper. We'll provide the supplies and tools, you bring the creative ideas! No experience is necessary.
