Potluck in the Park (help feed those in need of nourishment)

Potluck in the Park (PiP) counts on its volunteers to serve hundred every Sunday so please read carefully and sign up only if you're 95% sure you can make it!

Potluck in the Park has been serving a free meal to anyone in need every Sunday since 1991! Over 50 volunteers serve between 500 and 800 people who are in need of a free, substantial meal every Sunday. I like the thought of exposing Portlanders learning about the great work that non-profits do in our metro area and Potluck in the Park is one of those! Potluck is an all-volunteer, grassroots 501(c)3 non-profit organization; read a little about them here: Potluck in the Park.

Volunteers should be aware that this is a direct contact, on-the-ground volunteer experience with direct interaction with people with a wide variety of challenges. That's the great part--no middle folks, no bureaucracy, no layers--right from the volunteer directly to whomever is in need of a meal that day. You will be serving and interacting with people who are confronting challenges--homelessness, mental illness, possibly drug or alcohol issues--as well as anyone who just needs nourishment on a Sunday. If this concerns you, check PiP's Web page to see if it's the right opportunity for you. For me, it's been a great experience that I continue to return to.

Potluck serves rain or shine. If it's raining, we serve underground in the parking lot; if it's nice, it's up in the open air of O'Bryant Square. Transportation and public transit is on their Web site. Free parking in the parking garage underneath even if serving down there--just drive in slowly and find a spot.

Julie, thank you for hosting this. It was really well organized and well worth helping those in need. Also, nice meeting the volunteers. I will definitely do this again.

Great! I have been the director of two shelters for the homeless and always appreciate helping someone out.
