6.00pm - Talk - "Scalable Data Modelling" with David Simons from OVO (https://ovo.com)

Data Modelling is an important tool in the toolbox of a developer. By building and communicating a shared understanding of the domain they're working with, their applications and APIs are more useable and maintainable. However, as you scale up your technical teams, how do you keep these benefits whilst avoiding time-consuming meetings every time something new comes along? This talk reminds ourselves of key data modelling technique and how our use of Kafka changes and informs them. It then examines how these patterns change as more teams join your organisation and how Kafka comes into its own in this world.

David is currently a Data Architect at Ovo Energy in London, advising on how their many teams can use Kafka as a backbone for their system. Prior to this, he has been a software developer and platform engineer managing data and distributed systems for clients including BBC, CitiBank and RBS.

6:45 pm - Talk - "Building Event-Driven Microservices using Kafka Streams" with Stathis Souris from ThousandEyes (https://www.thousandeyes.com)

This is a talk about our journey in the Endpoint Agent in ThousandEyes, using Kafka Streams as a stream processing library to build reactive backends.
Throughout our journey, we discovered patterns, pitfalls, and learned a few lessons. I'm going to be describing some of our use cases and why we chose Kafka Streams. Also, I will be talking about the production issues we faced and how we resolved them.

Bio
Stathis spent several years in Athens, Greece, as a Software Engineer before moving to London. Enjoys working with large distributed systems using technologies like Kafka, Elasticsearch, Java, Kotlin, and other JVM technologies.
