Mazatzals - Deer Creek Loop
Details The Mazatzals are really something to behold. Even after the Willow fire in 2004, they are really a unique place that is similar...yet strikingly different than the Superstitions. The Deer Creek Loop is a hike through several deep canyons in the eastern portion of the Mazatzal Mountains, with several options for exploring the several forks of Deer Creek. This hike starts from one of the few Mazatzal Wilderness trail-heads located next to a paved highway. As one description put it nicely - Avid hikers will like it, and the casual hiker will probably turn around. Getting There From Mesa, drive about 63 miles north on Highway 87. Turn left into the Deer Creek trail-head, just south of the junction with Highway 188. The Loop From the Deer Creek trail-head, we will start out to the northwest on the Deer Creek Trail (Forest Tral 45) as it climbs onto a low ridge. Within a short distance both the Gold Ridge Trail (our return segment) and the South Fork Deer Creek Trail branches left; we are going to stay right at both junctions. The Deer Creek Trail continues on, passing Bars Canyon Trail to our right. We still stay straight on Deer Creek Trail to the junction of the Davey Gowan Trail. After this short trail segment, we follow a forest road for a short distance until we connect up with the Gold Ridge Trail. The Gold Ridge Trail will be on our left, just after Pigeon Spring. We will stay on this trail all the way back to the trailhead. The Plan Saturday morning we'll leave and head out to the trail-head. We will head out on the trail and try to make it as far as Pigeon Springs at 9.2 miles into the trip. This will leave us a bit over 5 miles to get back to the trail-head Sunday morning and back to the valley. **Note: Last time we did this in 2016, this hike required a large amount of bush wacking and path finding through burn areas. What we're about

This group is for anyone interested in backpacking, camping, hiking, and wilderness adventures. All skill levels are welcome, from the true day-hiker beginner ready to make the leap into backpacking, to the seasoned and traveled backpacker. In this group, we will definitely be seeking out the roads less traveled! So do not be intimidated if you have little to no backpacking experience, I love introducing people to question is dumb, and there is plenty of experience to share.

This group is intended to be a free-formed, user-driven, laid-back backpacking group. While we will be focusing on backpacking events, we will also have car-camping events and possible intermittent 'other activities' (local get-togethers, music venues, etc.) along the way...suggestions are always welcome.

REMEMBER that this is your group and without your support, we aren't really a group. That said, we have a truly voluntary donation option! It is not required that you donate in order to participate in this group or attend our meetups (aside from any event-specific costs). Please do not feel obligated to donate…but at the same time, please consider donating to the group. ANY amount, at any time, is GREATLY appreciated! With your help we’ll keep on planning more and more epic adventures for everyone!
