This Wild Stew event will be the first of two trainings we are putting together to teach volunteers how to conduct surveys for Opportunities for Solitude. Opportunities for Solitude is one of the criteria needed for an area to become designated Wilderness. Participants need to be prepared to hike up to 12 miles over the weekend. We will be meeting at the First Water trail head on Saturday morning at 8am. Once everyone has arrived we will find a shady spot and discuss the ins and outs of Solitude monitoring and a few other tasks associated with this project. From there participants will hike out towards Black Mesa and camp for the night. On Sunday, participants will hike out via the Lost Dutchman trail documenting solitude in small groups or individually.

Participants need to be prepared to hike up to approx. 12 miles along rugged and at times steep terrain with overnight backpacking gear. We will be hiking along three trails, including First Water, Black Mesa, and Lost Dutchman.

AWC will NOT be providing dinner on this trip. Water will be available in the spring with filtration. All necessary tools and training will be provided. You must wear closed toed shoes.
