Mazatzal Wilderness Trail Maintenance - Deer Creek Trail - Part 1

Join us for a two day weekend trail maintenance project in the Mazatzal Wilderness, backpacking in three easy miles to a beautiful creekside campsite and working on the Deer Creek Trail from there.

The work involved will include a mix of brushing vegetation overgrowth with loppers and pruning saws, deadfall tree removal with crosscut saws, and the possibility of some treadwork.

The trailhead is easily accessible to all vehicles a very short distance off Highway 87.

MEETING LOCATION & DIRECTIONS

Meet at 8 AM, December 7 at the Deer Creek Trailhead.

From Phoenix, take AZ Highway 87 north to to the intersection with Highway 188. Turn left directly across from the 188 turn, following signage for the Deer Creek Trailhead, and park at the turnaround loop at the end of the road several hundred feet from the highway.

GEAR LIST

We will be backpacking in several miles to a campsite along the trail for Saturday night.

• A large overnight backpack that can hold all your gear
• Water — 3 – 4 liters per day and water purification/filtration capability— there should be creek water available in the area where we'll be camping
• Food — Breakfasts, lunches, dinners, snacks
• Personal protective equipment: work gloves, eye protection (sunglasses are fine) — hard hat will be provided
• Under our volunteer agreement with the Forest Service, you must wear closed-toe shoes or you will not be able to join us
• You must wear long pants and a long sleeve shirt while working
• Warm layers for the evening
• Sun protection (sun screen, sunglasses, hat, etc.)
• Camping gear - sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent/shelter, flashlight (batteries), plate/bowl, utensils, stove, toiletries/toothbrush, first aid kit, other?
• Optional: Hiking poles
