In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez (and Holiday Book Exchange!)
Our book for December is a novel suggested by one of our wonderful regular attendees - publisher's description is below. Note that this month's meeting will be on a Tuesday, an exception to the usual schedule. In addition to the book discussion, we're going to add a little holiday twist to this month's meeting: a white elephant (aka Secret Santa or Yankee swap) book exchange! If you want to participate, bring a new (or new-ish condition) book worth $20 or less, and see what book you get in return! PLEASE make sure we know at least 24 hours in advance if you sign up, but later cannot attend. We will be booking the location the day before we meet, and our final count of confirmed attendees will be made at that time. The amount of people signed up will dictate our choice of venue, and it's very discourteous to the hosting restaurant if we are way off from our headcount, which could end up limiting future reservations. *** It is November 25, 1960, and three beautiful sisters have been found near their wrecked Jeep at the bottom of a 150-foot cliff on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. The official state newspaper reports their deaths as accidental. It does not mention that a fourth sister lives. Nor does it explain that the sisters were among the leading opponents of Gen. Rafael Leonidas Trujillo’s dictatorship. It doesn’t have to. Everybody knows of Las Mariposas―“The Butterflies.” In this extraordinary novel, the voices of all four sisters―Minerva, Patria, María Teresa, and the survivor, Dedé―speak across the decades to tell their own stories, from hair ribbons and secret crushes to gunrunning and prison torture, and to describe the everyday horrors of life under Trujillo’s rule. Through the art and magic of Julia Alvarez’s imagination, the martyred Butterflies live again in this novel of courage and love, and the human cost of political oppression.

What we're about

Hello friends! This club was started in November 2016 by a book lover who enjoys being exposed to new ideas from interesting people. We meet together once a month in Arlington restaurants for food, drink, and pleasant discussion. Our meetings are usually located in/near the Clarendon neighborhood, and will be Metro-accessible.

We read both fiction and non-fiction books; feel free to directly message the organizer with any suggestions. The length of the books chosen will allow for a casual reading pace over one month, although some longer books may be selected for meetings posted a few months in advance.
