What we're about

This is a photography group for discussing, sharing, and critiquing. Our focus is making art with photography. Let's talk about how to make images really different. Welcome all photography styles such as street, fine art, landscape, portrait, photojournalism, etc. Let's share images, provide tough feedback, talk about styles, discuss favorite photographers, and figure out how to make our images evoke emotions. Join if you want to share with others who are creative, open, and want to meet new people who want to make art.

Photo Mentoring

At the last exhibit opening I talked with Polly and Paul about the idea of our group providing some sort of youth mentorship centered around photography. It would be for teens. I am a Community Friends Mentor and know how important it is for kids - especially early teens to experience different ways of expressing themselves.

This might just be a one off workshop or maybe a multiple session activity as determined by the program.

I wonder if any of our members is associated with a school or other organization that might facilitate a photography mentoring program. Also, how many of our members would be interested is working with a teen, possibly with their own equipment, possibly we would get some disposable cameras.

Actually Paul's idea. I think it would be a great exercise to see people's composition in real-time. The idea of getting a sneak of what a person's camera position is with a shot (on a tripod). I have done this with others in the past. Of course, someone may change your angle, focus, zoom, etc. It's all subjective, aggravating, and absolutely fun! Hope we get some takers!

Free Image Processing Tools

Some of you may not know about some of the free software that is out there to process images. One great resource is a suite of photo manipulation programs Image Magick: http://www.imagemagick.org/script/index.php These programs are designed so that you can create batch files and perform repeated operations on hundreds or thousands of files quickly and easily. Also available is GIMP: http://www.gimp.org/ This is an entire image processing program, with capabilities similar to PhotoShop. The up side is the price; the down side is the quirky user interface. Should we have a MeetUp to discuss this software and other software like it? Jon
