Celebration of the Life and Works of Nawal el Saadawi

Details

A member of Atheist Ireland is hosting this meetup and asked us to publicise it.

On Sunday, 21 April Nawal el Saadawi died in Cairo at the age of 89. The loss of this extraordinarily outspoken feminist writer and critic of the partriarchy associated with religion and capitalism, although not as well known in the west as she should be, must not go unmarked. We will be showing a Channel 4 News interview with her by Krishnan Guru-Murthy as part of their Ways to Change the World series: Feminism, Fiction and the Illusion of Democracy*. There are many interviews with her on YouTube but this seems to be the most intimate with least razamataz. A sample of her output can be seen on Amazon (https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=nawal+el+saadawi) although other booksellers are most definitely available. I most definitely will be reading her two-part autobiography A Daughter of Isis and Walking through Fire.

The showing will be followed by a discussion in which anyone who has read any of her works will be particularly encouraged to participate. Hopefully we will also discuss the role of activism by women in and from Islamic countries.

Other meetup groups we shall be inviting are the British and Irish Ex-Muslim Meetup Group, the Cleveland Freethinkers and Ex-Muslims South Africa.
