The Mysterious iBooks Author

I've received several questions about iBooks Author. I'm not sure why. Maybe because I look like a geek or because I look scholarly. Not sure.

So, today I downloaded the app and did some reading on this mysterious program. First of all, I was not sucked into a vortex. Having gotten past that fear, I began clicking and making pages. The interface is similar to Pages, Numbers, and iWeb -- simple and elegant. As I was playing with the features I suddenly felt compelled to write my biography. I could talk about my years living in a cave and worshiping Indian bones. But, really, the software is mainly intended to write textbooks and then upload them to the iBookstore. The Texas Board of Education will then buy thousands and make you rich.

The best thing about iBooks Author is that it's a free app from the Mac App Store. If you don't want to write a textbook, don't worry, you can obtain additional templates and themes from the App Store, but these cost money.

The iBooks publishing system is designed for the iPad. And, in fact, you can hook your iPad up to your Mac and preview your work. You can insert movies and widgets to make your book interactive. For instance, one of the widgets allows you to embed a Keynote presentation. There is an option to publish your book as a PDF, but then all your interactive features are lost.

If you are a serious book publisher, I would recommend staying with InDesign and the Adobe products. But, if you just want to create a quick book for your fans to view on their iPads, the iBooks system is ideal.

I'm not sure why, but I'm having a blast translating Shakespeare plays into Klingon and uploading them to iBookstore. I encourage you to buy my books -- I need money to purchase Apple stock. If you can't read Klingon, no worries -- everyone in Starbucks will still think you are really cool.
