Inspected the hive yesterday at the end of week 2. My wife took some good pictures. We're first timers, so any feedback is welcome. http://www.greghuberphoto.com/share/beehive

Thanks Lily! Jennifer -- these hives were started from two packages. You can see the empty packages from right after we installed them in the last photo (34).

Wow. Cool pix Greg (and Greg's wife). I love the first ones of the girls coming and going. Very beautiful. I'm too new at this to give bee keeping feedback. Just moral support. : )

This was my first meetup and my introduction to beekeeping. I can't wait to learn more! If anyone is interested, I'd love to tag along as you inspect your hives and gain more knowledge. I am getting my funds together to invest in my own hive. I don't know that I will make it this season, but I definitely want to be ready by next year. Please contact me if you are a willing mentor! [masked].
Thanks again to all you wonderful bee folks!

This was a wonderful meeting. All of the info. taken in as a new bee keeper is so overwhelming, but this review after getting my bees was exactly what I needed. It is so helpful to hear others in my same situation with the same issues and concerns. Reviewing the process of installation, feeding, keeping and inspection was sooooo helpful. Kudos to Lily who did a fabulous job. Having Lance and Jim there to answer hands-on questions was most helpful as well. This is an excellent meet up!

Great meeting. A lots of useful ideas. I forgot to ask one question. Where do you get the professional grade bee suit? Mine is little tight and since my son has desire to help me, he could use the one I have now. Thank you!

Thank you Lily (and others) for the informative hive inspection talk. I've learnt a few more tricks for when I head out to the hive.

Hi Nathan, I'm also hiving a package into a top bar tomorrow.
I recently watched an online video about installing a bees into a top bar hive. They recommended not shaking the bees into the hive, rather, just setting the screen box into the hive after removing the queen's smaller screen box and dangling it from the bars (cork removed, candy cork side up) and then closing up the hive. They also recommended keeping the girls locked in for a day or two, as did an email from Bee Weaver, to prevent them from "absconding." They need food and water. I'm gonna use a hamster water bottle and a Benson syrup feeder. And of course, the other recommendation for keeping them from flying off is to put a drop or two of essential lemongrass oil on a stick at the bottom of the hive. Smells like home. If we aren't shaking and scattering the bees, hopefully there won't be many stragglers on the outside of the hive when we put the lid on.
    Good luck and have fun!

Would anyone happen to have an extra collins feeder for parking lot swap? ;)

I start to rear my queens this year. It may come out in 1-2 weeks.
Any interested party can contact with me. I will sell them in a very competitive price.

Anybody know someone in the New Braunfels/Seguin area with their own beehives that would let a 'new-bee' come observe and ask questions?

    April 8, 2013

  • Anna G

I think I may have a small infestation of hive beetles and would love to learn a non-chemical way to deal with them. Also something I am seeing just today in my most recent inspection is black/dead larvae in some of the cells. After doing research it looks like it may be foulbrood of some sort but its really hard to know what I am looking at since the descriptions of each type are so similar. So if anyone with experience in identifying the problem could speak about that it would be helpful. I am looking forward to the meeting.

    • Lance W.

Hi Anna, I have seen all of the brood diseases so I would be happy to help but I need more info. Can you send a pic? Does it smell? Are diseased cells mostly capped or uncapped? Do the capped cells have small holes in them? AFB would be unlikely but you need to find out ASAP since AFB is very bad news.

Margaret, your question is not clear to me. Do you mean that you find a wild bee hive in your garden? If this is your question, then you need to hire a bee remover to get rid of it. Or you can ask him to keep the hive for you. You have to pay him. If the bee remover keep the hive, usually he does not charge you.

    March 25, 2013

  • Shifu H.

    I'd like to learn.
