Luling is a small town an hour SE of Austin, known for oil, BBQ and watermelon! Yep, it holds the world record watermelon seed spitting contest. According to Texas Monthly, Luling is home to some of the best BBQ in the Lone Star State. The most popular is Luling City Market.
Another popular attraction is the Pump Jack Tour. There are almost two hundred oil well pump jacks within the city limits of Luling. The Chamber of Commerce commissioned a local artist to create moveable art to decorate many of the wells along the highways. See how many you can find on your way to downtown Luling. We'll start off the day with a BBQ lunch at the City Market.
We'll get our exercise in with a hike in Palmetto State Park and perhaps a dip in the San Marcos River. We'll enjoy some watermelons and have our own seed spitting contest!
On our way back to Austin, for those still hungary, we'll make a stop at Black's Barbeque in Lockhart, known as the BBQ Capital of Texas. Black's was established in 1932 and has been recognized in various publications such as the New York Times and Texas Monthly magazine. During President Lyndon Johnson's term in the 1960's, the President asked Black's BBQ to provide barbecue sausage to be served on the grounds of the U.S. Capital in front of the Smithsonian Institute. With Secret Service and Department of the Agriculture personnel supervising the operations, the sausage was prepared and flown directly to Washington, D.C. for this Presidential affair.
