Operational Automation - Helping Netflix developers sleep at night!

Details

Netflix uses the micro services architecture that collectively do magic together to give customers the end product they love to use. The infrastructure to support this consists of thousands of nodes running hundreds of services. Supporting this scale would be impractical without proper automation to detect and remediate issues.

This session will cover our journey of operational automation and auto remediation for stateful services like cassandra, the pain points we experienced and our path forward. We will share real world examples and details about the tech stack we use including StackStorm.

Speakers

Sayli Karmarkar - Senior Software Engineer, Platform Automation Engineering
Sayli is a software engineer with 7 years of experience in developing platforms and services to configure and manage thousands of systems in an enterprise. She is passionate about designing systems with focus on scalability and performance. Sayli worked at Red Hat on their systems management platform (Satellite) used to efficiently deploy, configure and monitor RHEL infrastructure. To extend her skill set by working on the tools to solve operational problems, she joined Netflix half a year ago. Outside of work, she loves hiking, strategy-based board games, watching Netflix and spending time with her 1 year old.

Jean-Sebastien Jeannotte - Senior Software Engineer - Platform Automation Engineering
Jean-Sebastien is a seasoned Linux (System|Software) engineer with 13 years of experience automating management of physical, virtual and cloud based systems, as well as designing and developing software solutions and tools. Self-starter with deep knowledge of Amazon Web Services and Python/Bash shell scripting, he is very passionate about solving production issues through automated remediation. Since 2013, he is working as a Senior Software Engineer for Netflix. Outside of work, you can find him riding up and down the Santa Cruz mountains between two episodes of “House of Card”.
