Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward
Winner of the 2017 National Book Award Jojo and his toddler sister, Kayla, live with their grandparents, Mam and Pop, and the occasional presence of their drug-addicted mother, Leonie, on a farm on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. Leonie is simultaneously tormented and comforted by visions of her dead brother, which only come to her when she’s high; Mam is dying of cancer; and quiet, steady Pop tries to run the household and teach Jojo how to be a man. When the white father of Leonie’s children is released from prison, she packs her kids and a friend into her car and sets out across the state for Parchman farm, the Mississippi State Penitentiary, on a journey rife with danger and promise.

    What we're about

Welcome to the Award Winning Book Club!

We are a group of book lovers focussing on books that are award winners or nominees. We meet once a month in central London to talk about the book and it’s a great opportunity to meet others that love to read as much as you. We try to have a relaxed atmosphere so don’t worry if this is your first time at a book club, it’s not that high brow!

We want the club to be social too and so we encourage people to stay on after we discuss the book for a more relaxed get together and chat.

There isn’t an exhaustive list of awards we draw the books from but the focus is on the bigger prizes such as the Man Booker and Pulitzer. If anyone has a book they would like us to read please do get in touch.

There is a small price for the book club and this will cover the charges for running the group with any leftover being donated to the Books Trust
