The B Sharp Big Band is one of New York City’s newest collaborative jazz bands. We are all players of varying musical levels who want to develop our skills in a new environment. Through the big band experience, we hope to hone our reading skills, develop improvisation techniques, and achieve a blended sound through our improved musical confidence.
Our charts range from the classic big band charts of Count Basie and Duke Ellington, to arrangements of composers such as Charles Mingus, Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk, to more contemporary charts that represent the sound palette possibilities of a modern big band.
We will be offering fall, winter, and spring sessions, lasting for about 3 months. We will have 6-7 rehearsals, which will culminate with a public performance. Initially, spots will be filled based off traditional instrumentation, but there will also be opportunities for subs and drop ins.
We encourage everyone to join the meetup group and network at no cost, but please note there will be a fee if you decide to play. This will ensure we get the most out of playing together as a group, and will cover rehearsal space, charts, and making sure we are performance ready at the end of the session! Details will be discussed at our information session prior to downbeat.
If you are looking for a positive environment to meet and play with other musicians, come sit in with the B Sharp Big Band!
