JANUARY 17 - 22 - MADEIRA, ISLAND OF ETERNAL SPRING
Join us in Madeira for an amazing hiking holiday and winter break! Madeira is often referred to as the ‘Island of Eternal Spring’ because of it's fabulous year round climate. This beautiful island in the Atlantic belongs to Portugal and was voted 'Europe's Leading Island Destination' at the World Travel Awards in 2016. Madeira is in fact closer to the African mainland than Europe and is enveloped in vibrant lilac jacarandas, fragrant bougainvillea, orchids and frangipani trees, creating a colourful, picture-perfect landscape. The island is also known for rugged natural attractions like rocky coves, towering mountains and beautiful beaches. All in all, Madeira is a perfect place for hiking as well as more relaxed exploration of the many lovely small villages and hidden bays. For an unforgettable hiking holiday we will base ourselves in a charming 3 star hotel right in Funchal’s city center and it’s a very good example of late nineteen sixties interior design, which confers it an identity and style of its own. Our location is perfect for accessing the very best hiking trails and enjoying the fun of being in this cosmopolitan capital, Funchal, sits high on a hillside on the coast, around a pretty bay of warm waters and cultural heritage. It has a real mix of old and new with modern boutiques, chic cafés and stylish seafood restaurants, whilst amidst the Old Town’s cobbled streets you’ll find colonial buildings and authentic tavernas where you can sample the local cuisine. Naturally our modern accommodation offers all the comforts you would expect like free Wi-Fi, cable TV and private en-site bathrooms. Each room is uniquely decorated. Other amenities include a vibrant restaurant where breakfast and other meals are served. The bar on the reception floor has a nice terrace, and a television where guests can watch Sports TV channels. Free Wi-Fi is available in all areas of the hotel. On the last floor there’s a swimming pool with a wonderful view over the bay and the surrounding mountains. Madeira also offers an abundance of superb hiking options and the networks of trails are endless. We could keep busy exploring for many, many weeks if only we had the time! This trip does not involve technical mountaineering but the hikes on the island can be quite challenging so you need to have a good level of hiking fitness. A head for heights is also necessary in the mountainous terrain. WHAT IS INCLUDED: 5 nights accommodation in a 3-star hotel (twin rooms) in the heart of the city with views of the mountains. All breakfasts and 3 dinners. A generous amount of beer and wine with dinner! Airport transfers and taxi rides to and from the hikes. Swimming pool. Wifi connection. Financial protection in accordance with the Package Travel Law 1992. WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED: Packed lunches. Two dinners. We will eat out in Funchal to enjoy local cuisine in this charming town. Flights. The meeting point is at Funchal Airport on Thursday 17 January. You will return to the airport on Tuesday 22 January. What we're about

Do you like the idea of being part of a fun loving and adventurous group of people? Are you keen to get outdoors for weekends of hiking, rock climbing, canyoning, coasteering, kayaking or caving? Do you get a thrill out of feeling the wind in your hair and the sunshine on your face? How about days out on the hills in good company, followed by stimulating conversation with others over dinner and drinks in the evening?

Yes! We love it too!

BUT maybe you DON'T LIKE the idea of being in a group where you have to share a dorm with a bunch of noisy snorers! Or queueing for a shower after a hard hike. Maybe having to wash your dishes after dinner or peeling carrots for a salad does not really appeal when you are away for a nice break. Perhaps fighting for space in the kitchen to fry a sausage for your breakfast is not your ideal start to the day!

We know how you feel so we have started BACKABUSH 'DELUXE' for you to fully enjoy your precious weekends away. The idea is to provide quality hotel accommodation (no more dorms), delicious meals and a comfortable environment in which to relax after a day of outdoor adventures.

Come join the fun!

And if you fancy roughing it a bit then check out Backabush Xplorers (http://www.meetup.com/Backabush/) which was started way back in 2002 and has grown into the most active outdoor activity Meetup group in London. We have organised numerous budget trips away mainly staying in hostels and other group accommodation.
