What we're about

I have just started the first of a series of photography courses in Brighton.

I have been a professional photographer most of my life and for several years I worked for Sony in this capacity, where I devised and carried out successful training courses for Sony, John Lewis, Harrods and Jessops.

'Bill Black is a confident, talented and accomplished photography master.
His facilitation style will compliment any learner from complete beginner to professional photographer.
Being able to adapt his laid back style and blend his extensive knowledge into a well rounded enjoyable session is what I most admire about Bill.
If I wasn’t so far away I wouldn’t hesitate to attend. Highly recommend!'

Aaron Smith - Course attendee

The Beginners' Course is designed specifically for people taking their first steps in photography. Whether you want to take photos of people, landscapes or architecture, this course will explain the fundamentals of photography to you.

The course consists of weekly 2-hour sessions, 6 in the classroom, 3 outside ‘in the field’.

By the end of the course you will:

· understand your camera’s settings and how to use them;

· have learnt creative techniques to improve your photographs and find your own style;

· be able to produce final output of your images in print or online form;

Technical terms will be explained without jargon and de-mystified.

By the end of the course you have a new set of technical and creative skills.

All this is practised under supervision both in classroom and out in the field, where you actually take photos.

'Bill Black is a legend, explains well without jargon and just a pleasure to listen to and learn from.'

£10 Taster Session

Brighton & Hove High School

£10.00

Join me for a 90-minute taster lesson, where I’ll cover some basics of photography and discuss what a full course would entail. *** PLEASE NOTE THIS EVENT IS ADVERTISED ON OTHER SITES*** It’s your opportunity to try the course before you commit to the full thing. These courses are also advertised on other websites and through other media. More people attend than are listed here. What will the taster session involve? The session is designed to give you a range of shortened examples of what will happen in the full classes. After introducing myself to you, I’ll: - Run through the full course overview and give a brief description of a number of the major points we will cover in a beginners’ class. - Show you how to see your camera in a new light, making it seem less confusing. - Do a hands-on 30-40 minute practical session, so you can see exactly how you will go on to learn the fundamentals of using and understanding your camera. You will leave this brief session having learned a new skill. Touch briefly on the subjects of composition, camera settings and software. - End with a Q&A session, to allay your fears, satisfy your curiosity and kindle your enthusiasm. Bring your camera and a pen and paper with you. You don't have to bring a camera for this session but you will not be able to fully participate in the practical session without one. 9-week Beginners Photography Course 01

Brighton & Hove High School

£130.00

This course is designed specifically for people taking their first steps in photography. Whether you want to take photos of people, landscapes or architecture, this course will explain the fundamentals of photography to you. These courses are also advertised on other websites and through other media. More people attend than are listed here. The course consists of 9 weekly 2-hour sessions, 6 in the classroom, 3 outside ‘in the field’. By the end of the course you will: - understand your camera’s settings and how to use them; - have learnt creative techniques to improve your photographs and find your own style; - be able to produce final output of your images in print or online form; Technical terms will be explained without jargon and de-mystified. You will leave the course with a new set of technical and creative skills. All this is practised under supervision both in classroom and out in the field, where you actually take photos. You will need a digital SLR camera or compact digital camera with full SLR functions. You will also need basic knowledge of how to use a computer. Settings Understanding the effect of aperture, shutter speed and ISO can result in an instant and dramatic improvement in your photographs, allowing you to get a look to your photos that you’ve never been able to achieve before. You will learn how to use these settings, along with full manual mode, to allow for a complete confidence in understanding how to achieve the effect you want in your photographs. Composition Understanding how to frame a shot will give the biggest single boost to the quality of your photography. Whether it’s landscapes, architecture or a portrait, how you frame the shot helps tell the story. We will undertake a number of exercises in the classroom and outside to ‘train your eye’ to find a better photograph. Equipment and Lenses - ‘The right tool for the right job’ The default lens that came with your camera is only the beginning and the myriad range of additional lenses and equipment can be confusing. Learn what different equipment can do to enhance your images and what is essential for you and discover the style of photography you wish to explore. Software/Output As Ansel Adams said ‘if the negative is the composer’s score... the print is the performance’. Taking the photo is only half the job. Preparing your images for presentation is an essential skill to produce the best quality image Photoshop is the software most people associate with photography. Here, we look at it and other free-to-use software available to you on your phone, pc and mac that will enable you to improve your photos with a few easy tweaks. We also look in-depth at how to correct and enhance your images and prepare them for either online or print presentation. Course structure There will be a weekly assignment to be completed outside the classroom and discussed with me. Every third week, the lesson will be field based, instead of in the classroom , to enable you to become confident in utilising your new skills in a real-world situation. Tasks will be set based on previous lessons for you to practice your new-found skills. For more details, go to my website at www.billblack.co.uk
