This is a private, internal group exclusively for the use of current BEST Kids mentors and staff. If you aren't a current mentor, please visit our website at bestkids.org to learn more about becoming one.
The purpose of the BEST Kids Mentors group is to create a space where mentors can connect with other mentors in the BEST Kids program and learn about the many events and activities BEST Kids holds each month including Peer Groups, Mentor Training, Happy Hours, and other many other activities.
The group will also serve as an online forum for mentors to connect with other mentors for support purposes (scheduling support groups, posting on the discussion board, happy hours, etc.).
The Peer Group Breakdown:
• Thundercats- 6-10 years old
• Team Extreme- 11- 13 years old
• Team DC- 14-16 years old
• Strivers- 17 and up
Note on RSVPing for Peer Groups: the Peer Group you and your mentee are members of is noted on your Meetup "title", either Thunder Cats Mentor, Team Extreme Mentor, and Team DC Mentor. Please make sure to only RSVP for your Peer Group. We encourage you to use Meetup to connect with other mentors in your Peer Group - this should make it easier to see who is in your group! You'll also be able to easily email your Peer Group Coordinator with questions, feedback, and peer group ideas.
Mentors are also encouraged to post an event or outing and see if other mentoring pairs would like to join them. (If a mentor initiated MeetUp idea requires coordination with an outside organization or partnership, approval is needed by the BEST Kids' Program Director, Dana Staley.) For example, would you like to go play laser tag with your mentee but would like others to join you? Go ahead and post that on Meetup! Or are you looking to participate in a book club with your mentee? This is a perfect avenue to start one!
Additionally, the Meetup page has a discussion board, which is an open venue for mentors to post questions for other mentors and Advisory Board members. Please feel free to post questions about any occurrences or behaviors that you are encountering with their mentee. Most likely if you have a question about something, at least a couple other mentors have the same questions. Mentors and Advisory Board members will respond to questions with their suggestions, thoughts, and expertise.
