Karla Jay: Stonewall 50 - Reflecting and Gearing Up for World Pride 2019

Details

June 2019 will mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprisings, an event long taken over by myth.

Stonewall 50 will bring a month-long celebration to New York City. Up to six million people are expected to attend concerts, film festivals, music festivals, dance parties, and 150 exhibitions - just for starters. World Pride will be part of this celebration. But a major split has also emerged with Reclaim Pride announcing an alternative march at the same time as Heritage of Pride's NYC Pride March.

We will discuss our now-mythologized past, the erasure of lesbians from that story, and recent developments.

ABOUT KARLA JAY
Karla Jay is a professor, influential activist, expert in the field of gender studies, and widely published author. She was a member of the early Redstockings, Gay Liberation Front, and Lavender Menace, and is widely known for 10 books, including Out of the Closets: Voices of Gay Liberation (1972); The Amazon and the Page: Natalie Clifford Barney and Renée Vivien (1988); and several more. Tales of the Lavender Menace: A Memoir of Liberation (1999) tells the story of the author's participation in the Gay Liberation Front and their creation of - and her role in - the first-ever modern-day pride march. She is Distinguished Professor Emerita of English, Women's & Gender Studies, and Queer Studies at Pace University in New York City. More bio details here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karla_Jay
