February-Data Visualization Event

Details
To celebrate Black History Month, we're hosting a data visualization competition inspired by the Pan-Africanist, writer, scholar, founding member of the NAACP, and educator, W.E.B Du Bois. In 1900 at the Paris World Fair exhibit, Du Bois presented "L'Exposition des Nègres d'Amérique", which expertly, and artistically highlighted the progressing social and economic status of Black people in the United States, despite Jim Crow. The Black story is still told in data visualization by groups like Data 4 Black Lives and The Marshall Project. Now, it's your turn.
On 2/24/2022 we'll kick off a month-long Data visualization challenge that will end 3/24/2022. Participants will submit a single image data visualization and provide their motivation. Visualizations will be evaluated by societal relevance, visual impact, and data use. The winner will receive a prize.
During this meeting, we will explain the rules of the competition, provide a hands-on workshop on data, data visualization, and data visualization tools. By the end of the workshop, participants will have exposure to:
Observable (javascript)
matplotlib (python)
typical post-processing steps in a photo-editor
Let's make some visualizations!!
