Are you learning Hindi, interested in learning Hindi, or noticing that there's some great Hindi movies on Netflix? Join other people to learn Hindi at the level you are currently at. But I'm not Indian! you may say. Well, join the club- literally. While learning the language, we will definitely discuss Indian culture, history, music and film. But this won't be just that group that talks about learning, but doesn't learn anything. We'll focus on materials that have helped me a lot, and we'll encourage each other- and have fun at the same time.
Hindi is an language that is generally spoken in much of North India and MumbaiI. It is also largely used in federal government as well across India and is the language of most Bollywood films. Hindi is an Indo-European language (as was Sanskrit!), which means it is related to Farsi and most European languages, including English.
Hindi's sister language is Urdu, the language which most of us associate with Pakistan, but which is spoken throughout India. Hindi still uses Urdu words, especially in Bollywood films, and both languages are associated with great literature, film and music. This means it is influenced by Persian as well! So if you love getting obsessed with things, Hindi not only is interesting in itself, but it is a gateway to a vast ocean of languages, histories and religions.
I am not fluent in Hindi-- I am somewhere between upper beginner and lower intermediate-- but I can read and write in Hindi (and Urdu script) and can have some basic conversations. It is difficult to find people to learn with here in the States, so I need people to learn with who can push me and inspire me. Hopefully I can do the same for you!
