In this Meetup, Gary Vaughan will show how WordPress.Com, a simplified version of popular WordPress software, can be a fully functional website for non-profits. He will discuss general principles in planning, design and management that are relevant to any website software. He will assess pro/con of the all-in-one WordPress.Com platform vs a more robust but technical WordPress.Org self-hosted site. He will then Demo a template site for a non-profit on WordPress.Com, and show the benefits of its built-in SEO, Security, and Software updates, as well as Help and Theme directory. After questions, Gary will explain practical steps in opening up a free WordPress.Com account and starter site, with self-help tips on his website. He also offers a free one-hour tutorial after the program for any non-profits interested in pursuing a WP.COM site.

BIO: Gary is a Senior Technical Consultant with Acuity, Inc. and provides Help Desk support for internal WordPress blogs and websites at the State Department in Washington D.C. He is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and has an MBA and an MA in Computer Systems Management. In his free time he has been an active volunteer in assisting non-profits through such events as the annual DC Project Management Day of Service. Prior to his IT contract work at State, Gary was a Project and Program Officer at the U.S. Agency for International Development.
