Kootiyattom is a 2000 year old sacred ritual theatre form from Kerala, performed in Sanskrit and based on ancient and early mediaeval Sanskrit plays. It is officially recognised by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Once ritually combined to the Koothambalams, I the performing spaces within temples, even today it is little known and rarely performed outside Kerala.
This session intends to deconstruct the ancient art form and relate it to our expression of ourselves, and connect the dots between various kinds of creative expression such as dance, music, art and design, and even interpersonal and behavioural skills in business organisations.
The Masterclass will be led by celebrated Kootiyattom actor Sooraj Nambiar and noted Mizhavu drummer Kalamandalam Rajeev, and mediated by theatre director and researcher Arka Mukhopadhyay.
A Kootiyattom performance is a masterpiece by design. The Masterclass will take you behind the scenes, combining both theoretical and practical aspects - with the basic steps, rhythms and breath work in Kootiyattom.
Through an interactive lecture-demonstration, you will explore:
- The history, the social context and significance of the form - then and now - The structure of the form and how the different elements work together - Design of the performance and how the spectators’ experience is mediated - Decode its unique sense of temporality and expression
