Abstract:

In modularising a codebase, whether moving to micro-services or Java 9, or just seeking to improve development agility, the challenge isn’t the technology change. The hardest problem is identifying and extracting modules of code out of the monolith.

This session presents tried and tested techniques for migrating a monolithic code base to a modular architecture using Structure101 "Studio" and "Workspace". The key to understanding the refactoring required lies in the dependencies between the monolith and the code to be extracted. These dependencies also drive planning and estimation which is critical to the success of such structural refactoring.

The bios for the 2 speakers:

Chris Chedgey is co-founder, product designer, and developer at Structure101. Chris has also worked on large military and aerospace systems in Europe and Canada, including the International Space Station. He has spoken at many user groups and conferences including Oredev, JavaOne, JAX, Javaland, 33rd Degree, JFocus, and Devoxx.

Mike Swanston-Rainford is a seasoned software professional with more than 30 years experience in the industry. He has worked with clients in telecoms, finance, insurance and manufacturing throughout North America, Europe and the Far East developing Java enterprise applications. He now specialises in structural analysis and refactoring of legacy monolithic applications.
