Our journey to the cloud with Kubernetes and Kafka

Details

Hi JUGgers!

We are back with face-to-face events! Many of us were looking forward to returning to face-to-face events and to seeing each other's faces outside the screen, and here we are again 😃

On this occasion, we would like to invite you to join us in 2 exciting talks that our friends from eDreams ODIGEO have prepared for us: one about:

  1. Their journey to the cloud with Kubernetes.
  2. Their adventure migrating their Kafka cluster from on-premise to the cloud 🚀

We are sure you will enjoy them!

Of course, we would like to thank eDreams ODIGEO. They offered us their offices and the snacks and refreshments to make the event as comfortable as possible.

See you next 22nd 😉 !

  • Migrating a complex multi-legacy 24/7 e-commerce to cloud and Kubernetes

Carlos will explain how they migrated over 80% of their e-commerce online infrastructure to the cloud and Kubernetes. Their starting point was a platform with a mix of modern and legacy architectures: monoliths and microservices, stateless and stateful services, Oracle & Cassandra, Docker containers orchestrated by Mesos/Marathon and LXC.

He will share how eDreams Odigeo planned it, managed their business stakeholders from inception to completion, chose when to lift-and-shift, re-platform or re-architecture, what methodologies they used to roll out and test, how they got to benefit from the cloud very early in the migration, what were their most significant gains and their most challenging pain points.

Carlos is the Chief Architect at eDreams Odigeo, the largest online travel agency in Europe. He has led architectural transformations such as the migration to microservices, the movement to cloud and Kubernetes, the adoption of chaos engineering, and now creating a data mesh. Before eDreams, Carlos served in multiple leading technical roles in health care, computer security and video game companies designing distributed, scalable and fault-tolerant systems.

  • Migrating Kafka from 0.9 on-prem to 2.5 in Kubernetes at scale without downtime

Gerard will share the strategy followed by eDreams ODIGEO to migrate their high-usage Kafka cluster from on-premise to Cloud infrastructure, tackling at the same time the upgrade of the Kafka server version.
We will start from the most straightforward migration strategy one can think of and iterate several times to refine it. At each iteration, we will identify the problems and improve the migration strategy to solve them until reaching a strategy that allows migrating meeting requirements such as no downtime or no need to coordinate all the teams using Kafka.

Gerard is a Java Architect at eDreams Odigeo. He joined the company 7 years ago as a developer and continued his career as a Lead engineer leading a development team. 3 years ago, he joined the Architecture team, where he helped shape the most prominent online travel agency platform in Europe.
