What we're about

Basic income is a system that pays a regular income unconditionally to every individual. Come join us for a weekly discussion about basic-income-related current events and intellectual debate about the hypothetical functioning of such a system. Our goal is to gain a deeper understanding of how or why basic income could help society, and what its limitations might be.

All viewpoints are welcome, especially skepticism. Respectful debate is encouraged. The purpose of this group is *not* political activism.

Anyone who is doing any work related to basic income is encouraged to share with the group.

Our weekly discussions are streamed live (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsVjEFKDYn1yQ5E6raxM-dw/live) beginning 15 minutes after the start of each meetup. That's usually going to be 7:15pm Eastern Time on Wednesdays.

We also have a corresponding Facebook group. (https://www.facebook.com/groups/boston.basic.income/)

Basic Income Discussion: Economic Growth

Harvard University ... William James Hall ...

We've already done discussions about population growth and about climate and the environment. This week, we're talking about economic growth. What does it mean for the economy to be growing? Is it a good thing? Is it sustainable? We have finite resources on the planet, but what are the limits to economic growth? Are there any? We often say that basic income will grow the economy by activating previously untapped productive potential. Is there a downside to this effect? Is basic income compatible with a sustainable economy? What does a sustainable economy look like? Is there such a thing as sustainable growth? For optional reading this week, we have a recent Ensia Magazine article by Richard Heinberg entitled "The End of Economic Growth." https://ensia.com/voices/end-economic-growth-economy/ Starting at 7pm, we will make introductions and establish parameters for the discussion. The live stream will begin at 7:10pm. The discussion will be streamed live at this URL: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsVjEFKDYn1yQ5E6raxM-dw/live For those who are driving, parking can be somewhat of a challenge. There is free street parking across the street, but it might be tough to find a spot. There are also meters on Kirkland St and Oxford St near the bend where they connect. The meters are free after 8pm. If you have no luck finding parking nearby, there should be street parking along Beacon St in Somerville, which is a 7-10 minute walk. In any case, we recommend leaving plenty of time to ensure you find a spot. Photo by Celvin Purnama https://unsplash.com/photos/XrgAB4xoWao
