Calling all Backpacking Bettys living in the SF Bay Area! Whether you are a badass expert or brand new to this incredible hobby, this group is for you if you are:
A) Female (or identify as female) B) Adventurous C) ADORE exploring the great outdoors on foot D) Love to have fun with other strong, awesome women E) Wish someone else would take care of most of the planning and logistics!
My name is Liz and I started this group to fulfill my desire to plan and lead occasional backpacking trips for amazing, outdoorsy women who love to explore the beauty of the Great Outdoors, are goofy (or can tolerate my goofiness) and are supportive of one another. Although I've been hiking and camping for years, backpacking was something I didn't discover until a few years ago and I'm HOOKED!
Part of the joy, for me, comes from planning and researching trips. And since I can't very well quit my day job and leave my family to suddenly become a professional guide, this is the next best thing :) I'm a busy woman with a family and demanding job. Most events will involve 2-3 day weekend trips. Perhaps some 4 day trips as well. For ease of planning, most will take place in areas where permits do not have to be obtained way in advance, but occasional trips to places like Yosemite and Sequoia/Kings Canyon may happen, too.
All trips are non-smoking and dogs are NOT allowed (There are tons of groups who do welcome dogs if that's your preference). Backpackers will need to have all their own gear, including a map (but can certainly share gear to lessen the load!). Beginners are welcome on trips specifically marked as appropriate for beginners. Backpackers must be 18 or older and in good enough shape (mentally and physically) to hike while carrying a load for 5-12 miles per day (daily mileage goals will be clear on trip descriptions). I carry a Delorme two-way emergency satellite messenger on all trips. Outside of the Delorme, women are responsible for their own safety and security while on the trail. I am NOT a professional guide! By the way - if you are new to backpacking, check out my blog: www.beginningbackpacker.net. Learn everything you need to know to become successful!
