Join us for a very special Whale Watching and Wildlife Photography Adventure Workshop on Monterey Bay. The biodiversity in Monterey Bay is among the highest of any place on earth. There are many different kinds of wildlife to photograph including: Blue Whales (the largest animal to have ever lived on this planet), Humpback Whales, Minke Whales, several species of dolphins, Pacific white-sided and common dolphins, two types of Porpoises - Harbor Porpoises and Dahl's Porpoises, Brandt's Cormorants, Leatherback Turtles and occasionally Killer Whales and Minke Whales. Other species that are frequently seen include Mola Mola (Ocean Sunfish), Sea Nettle Jellyfish and a great variety of birds including Brown Pelicans, Sooty Shearwaters, Black-Footed Albatross and Pigeon Guillemots with their bright vermillion feet.

ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP: The reason that this workshop is very different from others is because it is organized by Photographers for Photographers. In order to provide the very best experience for everyone, we charter the entire boat and put less than half the normal number of passengers on the boat. The advantage of having a limited number of people on the boat is that you will be able to move from one area on the boat to another area and not have to fight for a space from which to photograph the whales and wildlife as they appear in various locations. If you have been on other whale watching tours, you know the kind of feeding frenzy that can occur when there are too many people on the boat. As wildlife appears in different areas, everyone rushes from place to place making it very difficult to get clean shots. There is also a lack of courtesy by people who are not serious photographers - we have all had those cell phones pushed into our shots.

ORIENTATION: Prior to the trip, Jodi will conduct a class in which she will share technical information on how to get the best shots, what to look for in animal behavior, how to function on a moving platform, etc. She will also cover, in advance, suggestions about the best equipment to use and what to wear. In addition to Jodi, there will be another marine biologist/naturalist on board to help locate whales as they appear.

ABOUT OUR INSTRUCTOR: Acclaimed Photographer and Whale Researcher Jodi Frediani will be the instructor for our workshop. She has been swimming with and photographing Humpback Whales on the Silver Bank for the past 15 years and is currently in charge of gathering fluke ID photos and collecting match-sightings data from the Silver Bank calving grounds of those North Atlantic Humpback Whales. In addition, she has been photographing the marine life of Monterey Bay for the past 11 years while taking time off for photographic adventures to Brazil, Argentina, Antarctica, Thailand and Africa. She has also taught a variety of topics both throughout the U.S and internationally.

Jodi's images have appeared locally in the San Francisco Chronicle, Santa Cruz Sentinel, the Monterey Herald and the San Jose Mercury News. They have also appeared nationally and internationally in National Geographic Ocean Views, The Atlantic, Wired.com, Vice.com, Brazil’s Veja.com, and the U.K.’s Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph. Some of her marine images can be found in permanent collections at the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Exploration Center in Santa Cruz and in municipal offices in Samana and Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. Frediani and her photographs of Mola Molas (Ocean sunfish) and Velella Velellas (By-the-wind sailors) are featured in the BBC’s show “Nature’s Weirdest Events.”

Jodi has recently won first place in the Art of Nature category.
