Why a conference for girls? Sadly, young women today are facing more pressures and challenges than ever. Did you know these concerning statistics?
· Only 4% of high school aged girls in the US are not actively trying to lose weight.
· 56% of girls as young as 13 have been sexually harassed.
· Girls say that the top three biggest barriers to taking on leadership roles are being laughed at, speaking in front of others, and shyness.
Each of these figures are troubling on their own, but is it even more concerning to know that 75% of girls who struggle with low self-esteem in this manner engage in harmful behaviors like smoking, drinking, bulling, and disordered eating.
Thankfully, we know what can make the difference. Since 1996, GEN has been intervening on behalf of girls and helping them find their power and be the leader of anything. For 9 years, the We Are Girls Conference has created a forum for thousands of girls to address these important issues, gain access to experts who can answer their questions, and learn tools for leadership. In fact, at the last We Are Girls Conference:
91% said they would recommend the conference to a friend,
87% reported that they were able to connect with others who shared their challenges or concerns,
84% said that the experts at the conference answered questions they had been wanting to ask, and
95% said they learned information which would help keep them out of trouble at school.
GEN is so proud of the success and legacy of this special event that we now hold it in both Austin and Houston! We’re excited that the movement in support of girls is growing, but it can only change more lives with supporters like you.
