Welcome to the Burning Issues Book Club, founded by @renatebakes! This book club has been formed to help facilitate our education on important topics facing humanity. Humans have historically been (and continue to be) horrible to each other, to our home, and to the other organisms that share this planet with us. We know things need to change, but many people aren’t sure where to start. This book club is a place for learning and personal growth within a safe online community to help us navigate and implement positive social change in the real world.

Our February 2021 book is "The Cooking Gene" by Michael W. Twitty.

About the book:
In this unique memoir, culinary historian Michael W. Twitty takes listeners to the white-hot center of this fight, tracing the roots of his own family and the charged politics surrounding the origins of soul food, barbecue, and all Southern cuisine. Twitty travels from the tobacco and rice farms of colonial times to plantation kitchens and backbreaking cotton fields to tell of the struggles his family faced and how food enabled his ancestors' survival across three centuries.
