What we're about

A meetup in Belfast for socializing and discussion about all things travel related. Inspired by similar groups in two of my favourite cities Tokyo and Portland. For locals, people new to the city and tourists to discuss their travelling experiences. Enthral others with a story or two from your past global explorations. Share your ideas, plans, questions or concerns for your next international adventure. A real opportunity to share stories and be inspired for your next trip abroad.

Hopefully this will be a positive group to share information and meet like minded people with the possibility of making new friends, expanding social circles and potentially arranging trips. A few items I'm looking into ticking off the bucket list soon are: Cuba, Sao Joao Festival in Porto, Haro Wine Battle in Northern Spain, Morocco to climb Mount Toubkal, Norway for Hiking and Kayaking, Burning Man, Southern US trip to Texas/New Orleans/Nashville maybe do the Bourbon Trail, South Korea to see Seoul and attend the Boryeong Mud Festival, Japan, Rome for the Marathon and plenty of carbo-loading, Speyside Whisky distilleries tour for the Dramathon, seeing some more of Ireland like Kilkenny, Killarney and Galway.

Plan will be pick a night, pick a location and hang out there with a few drinks!

Wine Battle, Haro (Spain) June 2020

Hi everyone, This is the second trip “meet-up” I’m putting up as a trial to see how it works (or if it doesn’t!). The first I’ve put up as Sao Joao in Porto leads on nicely to this the following weekend though both can be done independently. Certainly things can change in the next year but i’d be keen on putting together Sao Joao in Porto, over to Bilbao or San Sebastian for a couple of nights then down into Haro for the Wine Battle and some Winery's. The festival is on from the 27th to the 30th of June, with the main battle on the 29th. I’ve never been before but looks like great banter. Also potentially a bit smaller and more relaxed than comparable festivals like Running of the Bulls and La Tomatina. Widely known as the wine fight, the annual celebration of St Peter’s Day descends into vino-soaked madness, transforming the white shirts into a sea of pink as reportedly 130,000 litres of booze goes everywhere but a glass. Residents of the town of Haro and an increasing number of tourists of all ages carry water pistols and all manner of vessels for wine including buckets, jugs and back-mounted pump activated hoses usually used for spraying weeds or spot fires. More information here: https://wine-fight.com Unlike Sao Joao this would need to be booked far in advance, in fact many hotels in the area would already be booked, which might make this difficult to bring to fruition. I’ve already reserved an apartment in Haro itself for 4 nights for up to 6 people, that can be refunded up until 7 days before. If anyone wants to pre-book, i’ve got a code that would reduce the price with booking.com. There are also some tours available for those that wouldn’t mind staying in pre-erected tents and these are a cheaper, easier option. To set expectations, for me again, it’s very much a party/nightlife/drinking type trip with a couple of more relaxed days checking out the Vineyards in the area. We can chat about it further at the next couple of meet-ups. If anyone wants to stay informed about it, just sign up. Cheers Deane
