#31 purrr and Nextjournal

Details

In our next meetup Mikhail Balyasin will show how to make your code purr and Joe Kliegman will present Nextjournal.

In the third installment of our tidyverse tour, Misha will talk about `purrr`. This is a package that makes functional programming in R much more accessible and (dare I say it) fun. During the talk he will go over two major parts of `purrr`:

  1. API to use mapping functions that make iterating over lists easier and more consistent.
  2. Programming API that provides a suite of functions to perform functional programming tasks.

Then, Joe Kliegman will talk about Nextjournal.
Nextjournal was designed to make data science written in R easier to reproduce, reuse, and trust. It is a web-based application for creating living documents with executable code. The notebook-style programming and presentation environment focuses on long-term reproducibility by offering synchronous, automatic version control of all code, data, and computational environments that projects depend on.
For the talk, he will demonstrate some of the features of Nextjournal using an example that he wrote in R that leverages `purrr` and `rvest` packages in order to scrape websites for data that sheds more light on the problem of US gun violence.

Short contributions and announcements from the audience are always welcome. We want to be a diverse and inclusive group, please come, bring your friends. We're hoping for a nice crowd enjoying interesting talks and chats.

Our generous host Europace AG will prepare drinks and snacks for us!
