Zoom into Shabbat with your own candles, wine/juice and challah (or carb substitute!) We are continuing our online monthly Humanistic Shabbat tradition even as the pandemic is resolving in order to be more inclusive to those around CO and the country who have found a Humanistic Jewish home with Beth Ami.

Friday, June 11 at 6 pm

After the brief Shabbat Service, Arlene and Dave will lead us in an interactive conversation on the following passage from the new SHJ liturgy book "Here is Our Light":

HUMAN POWER

When human self-awareness began, we were at the mercy of forces far beyond our control. We died in infancy and in childhood, natural disaster and disease ruled our lives, and we trusted ancestral tradition more than our own discoveries and insights. It is no wonder that so many peoples in so many cultures turned to magic and mystery in hopes of turning fate a few small steps to their favor.

Today, in many ways, we have the power we once imagined our gods did. We heal the sick, bring sight to the blind, feed the hungry and com fort the afflicted. We are not perfect, but then again neither were our gods. We cannot heal all wounds and prevent all disasters, and neither did they. If lightning still strikes, we are better able to predict it and to face its consequences. The length and quality of our lives are many times greater than in the beginning," testaments to the power of human in sight and invention. Our natural world may now be understood and enjoyed rather than feared.

When your children ask you, "How did this come to pass? Why is to day so much better than long ago?" you can tell them, "It was the power of people that changed the world."

--Rabbi Adam Chalom

Arlene and Dave have put forth the following questions to spark discussion:

  1. Do you agree that “It was the power of people that changed the world?”
  2. If so, what are some historical examples of how people changed the world?
  3. Any more recent examples?
  4. What is within your/our power to facilitate change?
  5. What is beyond our control?

Relax with a glass of wine, light two candles, take a bite of challah and have a Humanistic Jewish schmooze with Beth Ami - Colorado Congregation for Humanistic Judaism.

The Zoom link will be sent when you click the attend button. If you'd like to have a copy of the service texts to print in advance, please email BethAmiRSVP@gmail.com .

Beth Ami is a welcoming community where we connect to Jewish past, celebrate Jewish present and link to Jewish future through a humanistic philosophy.
