What we’re about
“This is a group for anyone interested in Big Data. All skills levels are welcome."
Code of Conduct
Big Data Bellevue is dedicated to providing a safe, inclusive, welcoming, and harassment-free space and experience for all community participants. Big Data Bellevue is a group for anyone interested in Big Data technology. Our members are based primarily on the Eastside in the Seattle area, but may include online participants worldwide. Our meetings are held once a month, on the third Wednesday of the month, and can be either in-person or online. We strive to offer an environment that is geared to collaboration and sharing of information. Organizers, presenters, members and guests are expected to be respectful towards each other in all communication, whether in person or remote. Content shared at our group meetings or posted on our Meetup site should be professional and suitable for a workplace environment. Any violations of this policy can be reported to the Organizers. Actions taken may include issuing a reprimand or terminating membership for repeated violations.

This will be an ONLINE talk.
We have 2 speakers tonight.
(a) Nate Boot will deliver "OpenSearch, Your Friendly Neighborhood Vector Database"
In this session, you'll learn the basics of what vectors are and why they enable AI. Enjoy a short but sweet walkthrough of how to vectorize a dataset and perform neural / hybrid queries against it using the open source vector database OpenSearch.
(b) Samuel Herman will deliver "Vector Search Beyond the Hype: Real-World Implementation and Performance Insights"
This session provides a data-driven exploration of vector search implementation challenges through the lens of developing and contributing the jVector library as a KNN engine plugin for OpenSearch. We'll begin by establishing quantitative benchmarks to guide decisions on when and how to leverage vector indices, followed by an examination of critical operational design principles including code portability, logging, instrumentation, and hardware optimization patterns.
The presentation will demystify advanced vector search concepts such as product quantization, fused asynchronous distance computation, and DiskANN implementations. Most valuably, we'll share real-world performance profiling insights, revealing which optimizations delivered meaningful improvements versus theoretical benefits. Attendees will gain practical knowledge for evaluating vector search effectively in a production environments.
Big Data Bellevue Meetup was created by Intelius and takes place in downtown Bellevue. Intelius provides the only centralized service for delivering comprehensive information about people, places, organizations, and their connection to each other. Our state-of-the-art big data technology platform is utilized across a wide range of industries to implement specific solutions.
On the third Thursday of each month, we invite an industry leader in Big Data to give a presentation followed by a lively discussion on big data technology and its impact on business world. Past speakers include researchers from the University of Washington, as well as senior members of various companies, such as Microsoft, Amazon, eBay, IBM, MapR and inome.
