Evolving Data Technologies: Survey of Data Technology Trends

Details

Data technologies are changing at an ever-increasing pace. Ray Kurzweil (futurist) talks about "The Law of Accelerating Returns", suggesting that the rate of change in many systems increases exponentially. This is true for data technologies. This talk will help you:

  • Categorize emerging data technologies
  • Help define/refine your evaluation criteria

This is a loose survey of interesting data trends with analysis on fit:

  • Discussion of "caching" in relation to evolving data technologies
  • Transactional optimizations vs Analytic optimizations
  • Conditional performance of specific ingredients as evaluation criteria
  • Point solutions vs General solutions, and understanding criteria specific to you
  • The trap of linear scaling

Abbreviated topic list: columnar, in-memory, vector, GPU, LSM-Trees, Hadoop, Impala, Apache Arrow, open source DBs, closed source DBs.

SPEAKER: Jim Tommaney, Alibaba
SPEAKER BIO: Data geek since the mid 90's. Experience delivering data solutions across a wide variety of verticals: telecom, genomics, mobile marketing, fraud detection, online retail, global health trends, and more.

Currently - Architect role with Alibaba Cloud on parallel/vector/columnar/in-memory data technologies.

Previously -

  • CTO, Chief Architect of InfiniDB, an open source columnar DB. This technology is now part of MariaDB Platform X3- open source hybrid transactional/analytical DB ( aka HTAP )
  • Teradata - academic relationships including Stanford DAWN (ML usability optimizations)
  • TUNE - mobile marketing analytics, BI as a service, dataflows, data infrastructure

Big Data Bellevue Meetup was created by Intelius and takes place in downtown Bellevue. Intelius provides the only centralized service for delivering comprehensive information about people, places, organizations, and their connection to each other. Our state-of-the-art big data technology platform is utilized across a wide range of industries to implement specific solutions.

On the third Wednesday of each month, we invite an industry leader in Big Data to give a presentation followed by a lively discussion on big data technology and its impact on business world. Past speakers include researchers from the University of Washington, as well as senior members of various companies, such as Microsoft, Amazon, eBay, IBM, MapR and inome.

eBay graciously provides free drink and pizza!
