BDM58 (NEW LOCATION!): 1M queries/s with single-digit millisecond latency

Details

Big Data Montreal would like to invite you to its 58th meeting!

=================================================
NEW LOCATION: Notman House - see below

Join us on Tuesday June 5th 2018 at 6:00PM to attend a conference, as well as to network with other Big Data enthusiasts from Montreal!

All are welcome, no matter if you already have some experience with Big Data technologies or if you're simply curious to learn more.

We have one main presentation scheduled:

  • Real-time Big Data at scale: 1 million queries per second with single-digit millisecond latencies, by Glauber Costa & Mina Naguib

Modern NoSQL databases are capable of achieving high throughput in a scalable fashion. But achieving high throughput with low latencies adds an extra layer of challenge. This was commonly solved either by complex architectures with expensive memory caches fronting the database or a giant node sprawl leading to humongous clusters with vastly underutilized resources. But no more!

This talk will present the architecture and design decisions behind ScyllaDB which allow users to achieve high throughput at predictably low latencies while keeping TCOs under tight control. We will look at a real example of how that played out in practice by AdGear.

Glauber Costa is a Principal Architect at ScyllaDB. He shares his time between the engineering department working on upcoming Scylla features and helping customers succeed. Before ScyllaDB, Glauber worked with Virtualization in the Linux Kernel for 10 years, with contributions ranging from the Xen Hypervisor to all sorts of guest functionality and containers.

Mina Naguib leads the Site Reliability Engineering team at AdGear, a Montreal-based ad-tech company that's part of Samsung Ads. He spends his time writing code, keeping others' code running, measuring it all, and orchestrating dozens of services on hundreds of servers worldwide to make sure your online experience with advertisements is top notch. He has also, quite recently, developed a variation of the Stockholm syndrome related to work on GDPR compliance. Before ad-tech, Mina worked on back-end orchestration at an internet+TV service provider, web hosting, fashion e-commerce, free community WiFi (co-founded IleSansFil), and custom technical campaigns at a large Quebec advertising agency.

ScyllaDB will generously sponsor the event by provide food and drinks to the attendees!

Please tell your friends and colleagues :) !
