Meetup #2

Welcome to Meetup #2, and what we hope will be another interesting evening of presentations and lightening talks. You are encouraged to participate in the Q&A session and hope that the networking gives you the opportunity to meet with the presenters, other attendees and the organisers of the Meetup.

The agenda is listed below, followed by further details about the main presentations and their presenters.

There are three Lightening Talks yet to be filled. If you would like to take the opportunity to give your own 5 minute talk, then please let me know ASAP (contact details below). You may wish to promote an event you are organising or attending, a publication you have written, an idea for a new invention you have had – in fact, just about any subject you like! The floor will be yours for 5 minutes, just drop me I line with your name, title of your talk and contact details, and I’ll add you to the Agenda.

Going forward, we are looking for presenters for our subsequent Meetups. If you would like to take to the stage to give your 20-30 minute presentation, drop me a line.

Looking forward to meeting many of you at this Meetup, and for those who are unable to join us, hope to see you at one of our other meetups throughout the year.

Please also note that there is a maximum limit of 80 attendees for this event. However, in common with other Meetups, we unfortunately see quite a high no-show rate (despite pleading with people to release their places if they find they are unable to attend). We have decided to raise the number of attendees who can register to 120, in the hope that we can get closer to a full-house. We will however have to stick to a maximum of 80 through the doors. So on the night, it will be on a first come, first served. So make sure you turn up early to guarantee entry!

If you have already RSVP’d “YES”, but find you are no longer able to attend, please make the effort to release your space ASAP to enable those on the Waiting List the opportunity to attend – THANKS!

Should you wish to contact me, email me at mark DOT whalley AT hpe DOT com.

Kindest regards

Mark

Redis and Machine Learning Modules

As one of the top 3 databases chosen by developers, Redis gained popularity as the most high-performing caching solution on the market. Today, its capabilities reach far beyond caching, including real time analytics, high-speed transactions, message broker, job queue management and more.

Redis Modules are add-ons to Redis which extend Redis to cover most of the popular use cases for any industry. In this talk we will introduce you to Redis modules and how they can be used to execute Machine Learning models in real-time.

Kamran Yousaf

Kamran is a Solution Architect at Redis Labs, he specialises in development of distributed, high performance, low latency architectures. During this time, he has worked with a wide range of technologies and architectures from rule based development, grid and low latency application to enterprise file sync and share. Most recently he was VP engineering at a UK start-up SME, a leader in enterprise file sync and share. Previously he has worked at GigaSpaces, BEA and Versata.

A “data-centric” approach for security in Big Data and Hadoop environments

In this session, Sudeep talks about how “data-centric” technologies such as Format-Preserving Encryption (FPE) can be deployed to enable secure analysis in Big Data and Hadoop systems.

Sudeep Venkatesh

Sudeep Venkatesh is a noted expert in data protection solutions, bringing over a decade of industry and technology experience in this area to HPE Security – Data Security. His expertise spans data protection in Hadoop and Big Data ecosystems, security infrastructures, cloud security, identity and access management, encryption, and the PCI standards both for the commercial and government sectors. He has worked on numerous global security projects with Fortune 500 firms in the United States and globally.

At HPE, Sudeep is Global Head of PreSales for Data Security, with responsibility over designing solutions for some of HPE Security's largest customers in the end-to-end data protection portfolio. This includes email, file and document encryption, as well as the protection of sensitive data in databases, applications and payments systems. Prior to this, he was part of the Sales Engineering team at RSA Security where he designed technical solutions for some of its largest customers.

The Lab Series

As part of our Big Data and Machine Learning Meetups, we are going to introduce something we believe to be quite unique that we are calling The Lab Series.

The idea behind this, is that over a number of Meetups we will incubate mini projects that will continue to grow over time. Some of the projects may start off with a final goal, others may be nothing more than an initiator. Either way, the direction in which a project will eventually take, where it ends up (including the cutting room floor) or whether it divides and forms new projects will be guided by you.

One of the other objectives behind these projects is that we want them to be inclusive to all. Everyone who wants to play a part, or just follow the project will be welcome to do so. Contributors will be encouraged to propose new projects, suggest directions in which existing projects may take, final outcomes, alternative approaches. In fact just about anything!

At each Meetup, one presentation will be set aside to discuss a project. Maybe to present a development within the project since a previous Meetup, discuss problems encountered and their solutions, seeking suggestions on how to develop the project going forward.

At its core, we want the projects to be about Big Data and Machine Learning. However, to get there, it may be that someone needs to present a piece of the jigsaw. Always with the intention that it is seen in the context of the wider picture.

To start the ball rolling, the first project in The Lab Series will be about capturing Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) to track the position, speed and other metrics of commercial aircraft. If that sounds a rather deep and complex subject matter, fear not, it all starts with a Raspberry Pi computer, some simple home-made technology and little bit of software!

As this project develops over time, there may be presentations on real-time streaming data capture, Apache Kafka, column-store databases, integration with other data sources, deep analytics, machine learning, visualization…

The direction in which this project finally heads, is very much up to you – our Big Data and Machine Learning gurus!

Mark Whalley

From the early 1980s, Mark worked with Michael Stonebraker's Ingres RDBMS and then column-store big data analytic technologies. In 2016, he joined HPE Big Data Platform as a Systems Engineer specialising in Vertica and Vertica SQL in Hadoop.
