What we're about

For women who LIVE IN Long Beach (including Signal Hill and Los Alamitos) in their 40s and 50s!

BIG TALK is a project conducted by and presented by Kalina Silverman about skipping the small talk and getting to the topics and questions that make us who we are. ( http://www.makebigtalk.com and /or find her on TEDTALKS). I am creating this group to find other like minded women who really value having conversations with substance. I consider myself to be an introvert who struggles in an extrovert’s world. I love to socialize, but in small doses. I like to get together, but in places where we can hear each other. I like meeting new people, but in hopes that I walk away with knowing more than the resume version of your job or what you think of the weather. And I am confident that there are some amazing women out there who think like I do and crave meaningful relationships.

I recently read an article about people who have deep and complex personalities which I think speaks to who and what this group seeks:

Small talk drives you nuts. You have integrity. Action is what matters most to you. You love to listen to others and learn about other people. You can’t stand insensitivity, idiocy, or ignorance. You don’t seek attention. You appreciate experiences more than material things. You try to be kind to others. You take time to consider the worldview of things. You feel inspired by the world around you ( i.e. nature, art, music). Your soul thrives in new places. You are grateful for new connections and experiences.

This group will offer opportuntities to meet about once a month. All events will be in the Long Beach area. I feel proximity is important in building and maintaining new relationships so that is why I have reserved the group for women who live in Long Beach ( and the nearby small towns specified that get few to none of their own meet ups) . The meet ups will be small in size as well as the number of women who join to have more of a quality versus quantity kind of thing going on. I will bring the BIG TALK cards that have questions to start some deep diving juicy conversation - so you don’t even have to worry about that part! All I need from you is a positive, open attitude, and a willingness to equally share and listen. How delicious does that sound?

The intent is to keep this an active group via consistent and/or reliable attendance. Therefore, members may be removed from the group for the following reasons: 1) Not having visited the page for 3 months. 2) No Show to an event more than once. 3) Dropping out less than 6 hours prior to three events . A primary rationale behind this last condition is when reservations are made at restaurants, I find it unfair to the establishment, as well as myself, to have seats held that could be for other patrons, especially during busy hours. This cut off time gives me time to confirm and/or reset the number of reserved seats needed which resturants typically want the day of. Thank you for respecting this policy.

BIG Talk Brunch

Tantalum Restaurant

Lets ditch the small talk and dive right into BIG talk over brunch at Tantalum in Long Beach. Tantalum is situated along Alamitos Bay offering a beautiful view of the Marina. The restaurant serves New CA Cuisine with Asian soul. It is located in a large shopping center called the Marina Pacifica Mall. Parking is free and close! After we get settled in and get our food and drink orders going, each person will be given a BIG TALK topic card. At previous meet ups, we each took turns sharing and answering each card with those nearest to us, but feel free to make it your own and what feels most comfortable. Share as much or as little as you like. And if you veer off into other topics, that is fine too. These cards are just meant to open up discussions and conversations outside of the usual. Looking forward to us all connecting! Reminder: The intent is to keep this an active group via consistent and/or reliable attendance. Therefore, members may be removed from the group for No Show to an event more than once or dropping out within 6 hours of the event to three events . The rationale behind this last condition is when reservations are made at restaurants, I find it unfair to the establishment, as well as myself, to have seats held that could be for other patrons, especially during busy hours.
