Building Decentralized Tech Tools for Democracy

Details
At this meeting of BSGC, we will discuss an organization that hopes to transform democratic processes through the use of smart contracts and peer-to-peer decision-making, all utilizing public blockchains.
The Democracy Earth Foundation is an international network of developers who have set out to improve democracy through automated, immutable execution of the "code" of government. Their technology is in use in pilots around the world, including within the Illinois Blockchain Initiative. However, the group's philosophical goal is not just to augment existing, border-bound governments, but can also help create global governance that transcends those geographical barriers. By basing democratic processes on distributed ledger technology rather than brick-and-mortar institutions, they hope to change how democracy works for humanity's future.
At BSGC, Hannah Wolfman-Jones, Democracy Earth's Chicago Ambassador, will present on the group's various projects. As always, group members are encouraged to scrutinize and question every aspect of the presentation. During this time of intense interest in blockchain technology, it is fundamentally important that we feel empowered to question the assumptions and mechanisms behind each idea brought forth to our group.
