Blockchain for Social Good Hong Kong meetups are curated by PositiveBlockchain.
Is blockchain only about fintech?
We believe Hong Kong, as a key Asian innovation hub, would benefit from more knowledge exchange between two distinct communities: the tech sector working in blockchain development (the techies!), and the social impact sector (i.e. NGOs & iNGOs, think tanks, academia or public sector agencies) working to solve 'real-world' challenges, such as poverty relief, financial inclusion and environmental action.
What's the purpose of our meetups?
To promote inclusive exchange between Hong Kong's tech and non-tech communities – through discussing and learning from real use cases of how blockchain technology could be applied to solve sustainable development challenges in Hong Kong, or across Asia.
Who can benefit and how?
Social impact practitioners could benefit greatly from familiarising themselves with the new technology of blockchain, which has a potential to disrupt many areas of their expertise: from providing digital identities for the unbanked and homeless, improving the transparency and sustainability of supply chains, to decentralising energy markets, and more.
The blockchain experts could, on the other hand, gain “on-the-ground” feedback from the social impact experts who work directly with the socio-political or legal aspects of a challenge, which could lead to improvements or pivots in the technical solutions.
In general, the tech community could also gain a more holistic view of the broader dimensions of blockchain solutions, e.g. the real-world conditions for the demographics to benefit from the technology, potential unintended consequences, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals framework.
PositiveBlockchain (PB) is a not-for-profit, open-source database and media community exploring the potential of blockchain technology for the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals.
PB has sourced 800+ use cases, co-hosted events with UNECE PPP, Agora and GIZ Blockchain Lab in Berlin and Paris, and regularly published social media explainers on blockchain-for-good projects. The PB database relaunch is set for Summer 2019.
